PSHC Old Boys

Vets First XI

The Story So Far

The vets team were formed in 2005, after a number of the men’s first and second team players decided that it might be time to “slow” things down a little. Little did they know, that a fresh challenge lay ahead of them. In their debut season, the new Portsmouth & Southsea Men’s Vets team gained promotion from Wessex Masters Division 3, under the captaincy of Alan Dobson. The 2006/7 season in Division 2 proved to be their most difficult to date and the Old Boys struggled to find form in the middle tier and finished bottom of the league. In their third season, the vets had a solid year and finished a respectable fourth in division 3. After three years at the helm, Al decided to retire from captaincy and the role was filled by midfielder, Karl Young. The vets gained a few new players from the one’s and two’s (Beach, Figgins, Metcalfe, Mills, Schofield) and looked an all-together stronger outfit. This showed in their performances on the pitch with 5 consecutive wins over arch rivals US Portsmouth! It was no great surprise, when the Old Boys finished runner-up in the league to undefeated Woking and secured another stretch in the middle division. This season has been the vet’s best to date with a current league position of 5th – just one place below a play-off spot! The Old Boys have notched up wins against the top three sides in the league and have competed well against every team they have played in Wessex Masters Division 1. For the first time ever, it looks as though the vets team will be able to establish themselves as a genuine competitor in this tough middle Wessex Masters division…

Other News:

Every year, the vets team visit Caen for a one-day hockey tour. Alan organises the trip, which encompasses refreshments on the voyage to Caen, followed by a game of hockey (usually in the sun with refreshments), then on to Caen for a buffet meal and refreshments in the town and some more refreshments on the ferry home. If you don’t like refreshments, particularly of the alcoholic variety, then maybe this isn’t the trip for you???
